Jill Bolte Taylor

Later in 2008, I was invited to give a TED talk. At that time, there were barely a handful of TED talks online, and my claim to fame is that my talk, My Stroke of Insight, was the first talk to go viral on the internet.

Jill Bolte Taylor – Neuroanatomist, Stroke Survivor, and Inspirational Speaker

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist whose life changed dramatically after a massive stroke in 1996. As the left hemisphere of her brain hemorrhaged, she experienced a profound lesson in consciousness—losing the ability to walk, talk, read, write, or even grasp the past. Drawing from her scientific training, Jill watched her brain’s functions shut down one by one. Over the course of eight years, she reconstructed her mind, rediscovering speech, movement, and the deeper capacities of human resilience.

Her extraordinary journey inspired My Stroke of Insight, a bestselling memoir that spent over a year on The New York Times list. In her TED Talk, Jill powerfully describes how she navigated the loss and restoration of her sense of self, and how the tranquil perspective of her right-brain experience contrasts with the analytical left hemisphere. She illuminates the human capacity for neuroplasticity and teaches audiences how to replace stress and fear with peace, compassion, and mindful choice.

Beyond her personal story, Jill is the founder of the Jill Bolte Taylor BRAINS Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing brain awareness, recovery, and wellness. She continues to research, teach, and deliver transformative talks on how our understanding of the brain can empower us to live more mindful, connected, and purposeful lives.
