Gary Hoover

Gary Hoover (born March 19, 1951) is an American businessperson who founded Bookstop, an American bookstore chain, and The Reference Press, which became Hoover's business information company. He is the entrepreneur-in-residence at the University of Texas at Austin School of Information.

Gary Hoover (born March 19, 1951, in Lafayette, Indiana) is a pioneering entrepreneur and business historian known for founding two transformative companies: Bookstop, the original book superstore chain, and Hoover’s, a premier business intelligence platform. Inspired by a childhood fascination with Fortune magazine at age 12, he launched Bookstop in 1982, scaling it into the fourth-largest U.S. bookstore chain before selling it to Barnes & Noble. He then created Hoover’s, went public in 1999, and ultimately sold it to Dun & Bradstreet. With a foundation in economics from the University of Chicago under Nobel laureates, Gary later served as Entrepreneur-in-Residence at UT Austin’s business and information schools, and today delivers powerful keynotes on entrepreneurship, strategy, and business longevity .
