YOUR POOR HEALTH IS MY FAULT

For the first time since 1993, the average life expectancy of Americans has declined. For decades, the medical community of which I am a part has sent mixed messages regarding what is healthy and what isn’t. For example, we have said, “A calorie is a calorie.” Now we say, “Not all calories are created equal.”  Remember when eggs were a staple of breakfast, lunch and church picnics? Then we slapped the deviled egg out of your hand and proclaimed, “Eggs=Death!” But then we muttered something about good cholesterol and bad cholesterol and that those little guys were rich in protein and heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. We picked up your egg off the ground, wiped away most of the dirt and said, “Here, enjoy. Even the yolk. Have one or have twelve. Go all out Rocky Balboa!”

All this chaos and misinformation from good-intentioned doctors like me has sent patients like you to seek a second opinion from anonymous posters on the Internet.  FoxyDox14 may have a darn good recipe for chicken tacos, but I don’t think they should be your ultimate source regarding how you should eat for a healthier you.  It’s fair to say that we all want to be healthy. The problem is no one is sure exactly what that entails and how we get there. So we’re scared about what we eat… how much we eat… the kinds of activities we do and how much or how little we do of them.

Not surprisingly, you come to us looking for help. As doctors, we offer you a confusing litany of data where one study contradicts another and quick fixes in the form of fad diets promising to “take away your cravings,” “boost energy” and “melt away the pounds”, miracle pills that will “boost your energy!” and diuretics that will flush away your troubles.

QUICK FIXES DON’T WORK – They’re like bringing a kazoo to a knife fight.

The bigger problem is doctors like me.  We come in with our iPads, fancy knowledge and one size fits all approach to your wellbeing. We mean well, but often the results will make you sick, pun intended, In medical offices across America and, increasingly across the world, many doctors are giving lectures on self-control and then saying the same thing, “You need more discipline. Exercise more. Eat better. Cut down on the junk food.” We act as if you are oblivious of the problem or in denial. If you don’t respond well to this “prescription,” we label you as “noncompliant.” We gave you the solution but you refuse to follow it. End of story…

We should know that you are aware of your health issues. No patient has ever listened to a lecture on self-control and then responded with tears of gratitude in their eyes, “Doc, thank God you came along! Until this very moment when you said I was morbidly obese and must lose 60 pounds, I hadn’t even noticed anything unusual. I just thought everything below my waist had up and disappeared. Now I know I still have feet!”

Perhaps a clue of your actual self-awareness might have been when you told us that you have been on one diet or another most of your life without success. But in reality, we were busy judging you and looking down at our charts, so we didn’t actually hear what you said.

Rather than add to the shame game, we doctors can lead the charge for real solutions. It turns out, that we can help you accomplish many of your goals – no, not by slapping the cheeseburger out of your hand or making you cry — we can help you accomplish many of your goals just by listening. Wow. What a concept.

We need to stop telling you confusing and contradictory information. we need to stop and listen and devise a plan from YOUR point of view. We need to give you clear, unambiguous guidance that really works and be there with YOU as a guide to keep you accountable in a firm but friendly manner. We have to start listening to you. Then we need to give you clear, unambiguous guidance to strategies that work. To really make a difference in someone’s health this way, it takes time to get to know YOU, your lifestyle, your preferences, and your day to day eating habits. We need to discuss (to varying degrees) food choices, lifestyle choices and how these impact your health and make sure you are well aware of just how much impact your day-to-day routine has on your present and future state of health. Under the current medical assembly line-system it is challenging to have a meaningful interaction in 15 minutes.

BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in the coal regions of Northeastern Pennsylvania, after high school, Mike joined the United States Marine Corps.  During the Persian Gulf War, Mike put himself through four years of college, four years of medical school, and four years of residency to become Dr. Michael Repik, medical doctor.

One day, while healing the sick, curing the long suffering , and having to tell the moderately injured to fill out the proper forms and wait their turn,  Dr. Mike realized  the only true way to heal someone is to make them laugh. Really laugh. For laughter that comes from the heart and not dispensed by a nitrous oxide mask, heals the soul, if not the internal bleeding.

His humor presentations now help people reach their perfect state of health, physically and mentally.

He’s been told more than once that ‘you are the best listener I’ve ever talked to!’

Actionable, practical, doable strategies that are practical for you and fit into your lifestyle, designed for you to reach your best health. That’s what this seminar is designed to do.
