Prior to assuming her current position, Chavez held a number of political appointments, among them Chairman of the National Commission on Migrant Education; White House Director of Public Liaison; and Staff Director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and in the early nineties was elected by the United Nations’ Human Rights Commission to serve a four-year term as U.S. Expert to the U.N.
